Guide To Grooming Your Dog

By: Kelvin Ho

When learning to groom your dog keep in mind that each pet has her or his own preferences, and while many will enjoy the experience, others may shy away from being touched.

Preferably, you should begin when your dog is still a pup. You may have to keep each session short at first but patiently keep to a regular schedule.

Always use a soft but firm voice and manner. It may help at first to give your dog a massage till she settles down for you to commence grooming.

It might also be helpful to give your dog a reward at the end of every grooming session, to reward good behavior.

Bathing A Dog
Bathing a dog may require some care. Many dogs remain shy of getting soaped up. Make sure to prepare all items ahead of time and have all your items ready as you may only get one shot at it. Ensure the container matches the dog's size. Use a reasonable temperature for the water and a mild soap that won't irritate the skin. Be careful not to get any water in his ears or around the eyes. Those are delicate areas that are prone to infections. Use a kind but firm manner when talking and coax your dog rather than forcing if possible.

Dog's Oral Care
Cleaning your dog's teeth may require care. It's important to start while she is a puppy. You can start by using your finger with a bit of cloth to rub along the teeth and gum line. In time, you could attach a small brush to your finger and use dog-flavored toothpaste to help.

If that seems too much to try, here are some suggestions will keep your dog's teeth in order and his breath fresher:
  • Give him a carrot each day to chew.
  • Get a chew-toy that has ridges in it specifically made to help clean her teeth.
  • Improve the digestion by including cooked brown rice to his food.
  • Keep canned food away from her diet.
Remember that any efforts toward grooming your dog will not only improve her health, but will improve your relationship.
